Harmattan weather can have your skin looking very dry and under moisturized. This DIY body cream is super easy to make and includes natural ingredients. Combat the ashiness with this deeply moisturizing DIY body cream
If you’re currently in Nigeria, it’s the season of Harmattan which means the weather is really dry and hot. So you would need this DIY Harmattan Proof body cream to combat the ashiness.
I have a pet peeve of being ashy and under-moisturized which is why I came up with this DIY body cream. I learnt this method of mixing your own body cream from my roommate in University. So ever since, I just mix my cream sometimes to suit my needs.
This DIY body cream can be made from things you probably have lying around or can buy easily.
What You Need
⁃ A very moisturizing body cream or lotion or body butter that smells really good. (E.g. St Ives body cream, Victoria Secret’s body butter etc.)
⁃ Shea Butter
⁃ Coconut Oil
– Glycerin and Rosewater
⁃ Vitamin E oil (or you could just get the vitamin E capsules)
⁃ Sunscreen (cause this sun is not even here to play)
⁃ Lavender oil and Tea tree oil (or any essential oil you have)
⁃ Argan oil
⁃ Jojoba oil
⁃ A plastic bowl
⁃ A microwave safe bowl / pot
⁃ A whisk
⁃ A wooden or plastic spoon
⁃ An airtight container to store cream
What I Used:
L-R: Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Jojoba oil, Lavander oil, Tea tree oil and Vitamin E oil capsules
L-R: Glycerin and Rosewater, Enjoy Jean Patou perfumed lotion, Arko Nem sunscreen, Victoria Secret’s Midnight exotic body butter and an empty pack of unrefined shea butter
Things To Note:
First of all, please be sure to use oils you aren’t allergic to. The two most important oils here are Vitamin E and Coconut oil. The rest are just cause I’m extra, I already have them and I wasn’t taking any chances with being under-moisturized.
Secondly, if you’re going to use a whisk you use for cooking at home. Make sure you don’t use that while adding the body cream or sunscreen.
1.) Put your shea butter, a little water and coconut oil in the bowl. Whisk it till becomes smooth and soft.
2.) Add the tea tree/ lavender oil (about 5-10 drops) to shea butter & coconut oil mix.
3.) Add Argan oil (about 8-10 drops) and mix it all very well. Pour like 1/2 dashes of glycerin and rose water into the mix.
4.) Add Vitamin E oil as well. If you are using the Vitamin E capsules use about 5/6 capsules.
Then cut it with a knife to let the oil out.
Side note: The reason I use lotion in this mix is because I don’t like the strong smell of shea butter on my skin. If you are like me, I recommend using a moisturizing and nice smelling cream/lotion/butter.
5.) Now you have finished mixing all the natural ingredients switch your whisk with a wooden or plastic spoon (something you don’t plan to use to cook or eat with anymore)
6.) Add your body cream and sunscreen to the mix. The amount of body cream to be used should be about half of the entire mixture or the same quantity of the shea butter you used.
7.) While the amount of sunscreen depends on how big your mixture is. About 1/4 of an average sized bottle should be fine or you could do it at your own discretion.
8.) Your mixture should be looking something like this now, smooth and nice. Don’t be afraid to add some extra oil now if you are feeling moved by the spirit.
9.) Pour your Mix into the containers you have for it and voila!
How do I know it is Harmattan Proof?
I’m currently in Abuja, Nigeria and trust me when I say the Harmattan here is not playing. It is super hot and super dry! But when I use this cream my body stays moisturized all day.
My feet especially stay moisturized all day even after a long day of pedestrian movements in sandals or flats.
This cream is loaded with so many oils so a little bit of it goes a long way. Don’t use too much or you’ll have yourself to blame when the sun hits you.
The cream might get oily/messy if it is left in a hot place for a while so be sure to avoid that if you don’t like it oily.
I’ve been using natural oils on my skin and face for about 2 years plus and it took a while but I can definitely see the results now.
My skin is clearer, smoother and softer. If I might brag a bit further my skin and face are actually glowing. I have very oily skin on my face especially and I sweat easily but this body cream still works for me. If you’re like me, don’t be afraid to try it.
Also, if you have really oily skin on your face I recommend using Argan oil as a face moisturizer because it is a lightweight oil, (or any other light weight oil like Rose hip oil or Jojoba oil) that keeps your face moisturized and it smells good.
